Contact Lenses work by becoming the first refractive surface for light rays entering the eye, causing a more precise refraction or focus. In many cases, contact lenses may provide clearer vision, wider field of vision, and greater comfort. They are a safe and effective option if fitted and used properly. However, contact lenses may not be the best option for everyone. If you have certain eye conditions you may not be able to wear contact lenses. Discuss this with your eye care professional. Refractive eye surgery aims to permanently change the shape of the cornea which will improve refractive vision. Eye surgery can decrease or eliminate dependency on wearing eyeglasses and contact lenses. There are many types of refractive surgeries and surgical options should be discussed with an eye care professional. To correct myopia surgically, doctors are using the excimer laser to flatten the curvature of the cornea, although its basic shape will still be convex. Depending on age, transparent, fixed corneal lens provides approximately two-thirds of the focusing power. During laser eye surgery, the ophthalmologist removes microscopic cells from the center of the dome-shaped cornea, creating a newly contoured living lens within the patient's own issue. Ideally, after laser treatment, the nearsighted corneal lens will no longer be too steep and thus too powerful for the length of the eyeball. Once correctly treated, the cornea can focus light on or closer to the retina so that vision is clearer. |
