Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a serious disease which affects various organs of the human body. Eyes are also one of them. The consequences of diabetes for sight can be very serious and in the most extreme cases end up with sight loss. In developed countries, diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of blindness. A risk of losing sight is approximately 10-20 times higher for diabetics than for non-diabetic people.

Eyesight is our most important sense thanks to which we perceive up to 80% of all information from the environment. The human eye as the organ of sight represents very complex system whose individual parts have to work in perfect harmony. In the case of occurrence of only a minor pathological damage to these individual parts of the eye - the consequences can be worsening of sharpness of vision or even blindness.
