Contact lenses » When to wear contact lenses and when not

The number of wearers of contact lenses increases every year and wearing of contact lenses is safe if cerain rules are respected. Then they can be worn almost by everyone. Improving materials, which contact lenses are made from, also allow the wearing to people, who even did not dream of wearing of contact lenses a few years ago.

Contact lenses help in where classical prescription eyeglasses can not be used. Patients with a very high amounts of diopters can do such activities, which they previously could not. Do you want to change color of your eyes? Today, it no longer represents a problem. Despite of all this, there are some reasons, when wearing of contact lenses is not appropriate and safe and can do more harm then benefit.

Reasons for application of contact lenses

Optical

Correction of refractive disorders (myopia, hyperopia, anisometropia, aphakia, astigmatism), the correction effect is connected with a therapeutic effect in keratoconus. Stenopeic contact lenses not only improve vision, but also avoid a dazzlement and are used in aniridia, extended pupil, large coloboma of the irides, in far gone atrophy of the irides and in albinism.

Diagnostic

Special hard contact lenses, which serve as a tool for ophthalmologic examinations such as electroretinography, electrooculography, gonioscopy, foreign body localization, vitrectomy, ultrasound

Therapeutical

In this case a contact lens is helpful in healing process, for example in some eye expressions of dry eye syndrome. A contact lens as a bandage after eye surgery, as a carrier of drugs. Special contact lenses can also be used for treating a pathological state during laser ablation. Occlusal contact lenses in the treatment of amblyopia - it is less obvious than occluder.

Cosmetical

For covering of scares, corneal leukomas and especially as a fashion accessory.

Preventive

To prevent formation of conjunctival adhesions, in ambustions and chemical burns, in a general anesthesia to prevent corneal damage

Reasons, that are a contradiction of application of contact lenses

• The use of contact lenses is aimless, if there is a pathological state permanentlly decreasing vision in the eye, for example, a change of transparency on the cornea, the lens, the vitreous body or on the retina or within a visual tract.
• Each contact lens develops a certain pressure in the eye - a degree of reception is individual. There are even patients, who has burning eyes after the application of maximum soft and thin contact lens. This feeling is associated with excessively fungus eyes and eyelid spasm.
• Another problematic application can occur during a disorder of lachrymacy and tear film structure, during vascularisation of corneas going beyond the limbus by more than 1 mm - reducing or intermitting of wearing of contact lenses is reccommended.
• Impassability of lachrymatory ways and decompensated glacoma is also a contradiction.
• Acute and chronical, bacterial, viral or fungal eye infections and some corneal dystrophies are absolute contradictions.
